Emmy Award winning sports commentator Jim Nantz has called some of America’s biggest sporting events for the CBS Television Network since 1985. His voice resonates to viewers with a simple Hello Friends welcome on each NFL, NCAA or PGA Tour broadcast. Jim dreamed for years of getting involved in the wine industry, doing his research, traveling, studying and talking to experts in the field before a chance encounter with Peter Deutsch at a Connecticut restaurant in 2009. Peter introduced himself after reading Jim’s New York Times bestseller, Always by My Side, an inspirational book that chronicled his father’s long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and later became the impetus for Jim to open a world-renowned Alzheimer’s research center, the Nantz National Alzheimer Center at Houston Methodist Hospital in 2011.
The Calling name reflects Jim’s “calling” of America’s greatest sporting events, as well as a call to action for people to unlock their calling in life.
Peter Deutsch joined the family wine company, W. J. Deutsch & Sons, Ltd in 1985. Working closely with his father, Bill Deutsch, Peter guided numerous burgeoning wine brands to global success. A rare blend of creative and operational strengths propelled him to CEO in 2007.
In 2012, the Deutsches changed their company name to "Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits" to reflect their family-to-family approach to business. Peter also wanted to honor his father by creating a wine bearing the Deutsch family name, as a tribute to the impact his father has had on his life.
Peter found a great partner in Jim Nantz, who shared his love for great wine and vision to create a wine to honor their fathers. Peter's intimate knowledge of the wine world and access to top winemakers and vineyard sites were a boon to the friends' new venture. Impassioned by their shared calling, they produce beautifully handcrafted wines of which their fathers would be proud.
