The Method

Our winemaking mandate is to work with the best fruit the region can offer and treat it honorably, with classic, exacting winemaking; the most advantageous techniques, the finest barrels, and the patience to release each bottling at just the right time.

All of our Chardonnays are 100% barrel fermented in French oak using wild yeasts; undergo full malolactic fermentation; and are aged sur lie for 11-12 months with frequent stirring of the fine lees imparting additional flavor and complexity. We age our Gold Chardonnays in 40% new oak and our Platinum Chardonnays in 60% new oak primarily from the legendary Damy cooperage.

Our reds are also fermented with wild yeasts. After extended macerations, malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. A combination of French, Eastern European, and American oak barrels are employed, both new and one-year-old. Our Pinot Noir matures for 10 months in French oak, 35-40% new; our Bordeaux blends mature for 20 months in 60% new oak; and the “Our Tribute” blend matures for 22 months in 75% new oak.

The Makers

James MacPhail, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Winemaker

James has deep family roots in Sonoma County and a long history of producing critically acclaimed wines of tremendous character. Encouraged by his father, MacPhail pursued his calling to become a winemaker in the mid-1990s, mentored by a some of Sonoma County's most venerable winemakers and growers. Through this experience, he honed his craft focusing on Pinot Noir sourced from the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley.

Since 2002, James has produced over 100 different Pinots and Chardonnays with 90+ point scores making him one of only a few members of the 90+/90+ Club in Sonoma County. He's given each of The Calling Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays a clear, singular voice, vintage after vintage.
