On the nose, Bartlett pear, stone fruits, white flowers, lemon zest, and honeysuckle. On the palate, Bartlett pear, Meyer lemon, white flowers, and crisp granny smith apple with a hint of sea spray.

Searby Vineyard is located in the exceptionally cool Green Valley sub-AVA of the Russian River Valley and contains some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in Sonoma County, still bearing plentiful fruit, exclusively for The Calling. Planted in 1972 on a gentle west-facing slope, this ten-acre vineyard is known for its dry-farmed, sandy loam soils and the cool maritime influence of the Pacific. The older vines are head-trained, meaning they grow without trellising and undergo minimal pruning by vineyard manager and Sonoma legend Charlie Heintz. This enables winemaker James MacPhail to craft a luscious, concentrated Chardonnay that embodies the heritage and painstaking attention to detail in one of Sonoma's oldest plantings.

Production Notes
Hand-picked fruit from the 45-year-old Searby Vineyard was barrel-fermented with native yeasts followed by 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged sur lie for 16 months in French oak before aging in bottle for two years prior to release.
Winemaker Notes
The 2017 vintage began with an "epic winter," according to MacPhail, with record-breaking rainfall in January - nearly double the historical average. With plenty of water in the soil, plants did not stress much to begin the growing season and physiological maturity continued at an accelerated pace. This resulted in a compressed harvest, where many vineyards were picked ahead of schedule. All fruit was picked, crushed, fermented and pressed off before the devastating wildfires in October 2017.
